Lyft , the ride sharing company is offering free rides to Americans during the election day.
Inadequate means of transportation has been one of the biggest issues to voting among low income earners
and minority communities. According to a research from Pew in 2014 showed that almost 50% of non-voters were from families with annual incomes of less than $30,000.
Another research showed that in 2016 general election showed that more than a third of voters who didn’t go to college could not vote due to poor logistics.
In order to help solve this inadequacy, Lyft is offering half priced or free rides for voters on Election Day come November 6, 2018.
The on-demand transportation company based in San Francisco announced that this activity will give 95% of the population affordable access to polling stations.
The company said it’s going to give out 50 percent off promotional codes to partners that encourage voter turnout.
Vote.org, Nonprofit VOTE and TurboVote has been linked up with Lyft to help distribute the codes to anyone who needs them.
On election day, the company said it will also make available a support structure that will help voters locate their polling places to make it even easier to exercise their fundamental human right.
This non-partisan effort to get people to the polls is only becoming more critical.
This support from Lyft to help those voters who would be impacted by the closures (some of whom would have to walk three hours to get to the nearest open polls) will certainly be a boon.
According to Lyft’s Head of Social Impact Mike Masserman said “It’s about using our voice and our platform to make sure folks have access to go vote.”
In addition to these special rates, the company will also be working to help register riders and drives to vote.
They will help share voter registration information at Lyft Hub locations and on their social media channels.
More details about this promotions will be made available as National Voter Registration Day and Election Day approach in future.
