Pret A Manger has partnered with Chilly’s to create a new range of reusable bottles to help their shoppers reduce the number of plastic bottles they use.
The bottles will be available be in a selected number of Pret shops and feature three different Pret designs and sizes.
Pret has been encouraging shoppers to reduce the number of plastic bottles they use since last year when the company commenced adding free filtered water stations to across their shops.
Pret CEO, Clive Schlee blogged about it at the time when he asked,
“What if Pret stopped selling plastic water bottles?”. James and Tim, founders of Chilly’s, saw Clive’s blog post and emailed him asking if he would be interested in collaborating with Chilly’s to make reusable bottles for customers. Clive immediately responded in the affirmative.
The reusable bottles feature three exclusive Pret sizes: the apple robot, the cucumber snake and the watermelon lollies. The 500ml bottles are BPA-free and can hold cold drinks for 24 hours while hot can go for as much as 12hours.
Pret CEO, Clive Schlee, comments, “Plastic bottles are a problem. We all feel it even before we hear the shocking statistics about millions of tonnes of plastic ending up in our oceans each year.
I’m thrilled that we’ve partnered with Chilly’s to create a range of reusable bottles and I hope our customers love the designs as much as we do.”
According to report, founders of Chilly, James and Tim in a recent interview said, “We’re on a mission to accelerate the adoption and everyday use of reusable products. We aim to do this through creating high performing bottles that can be used everywhere, helping customers to reduce their reliance on single- use plastics.”
Thousands of Shoppers are able to refill any reusable bottles for free using Pret’s filtered water stations that are available in 66 shops in London, Manchester, Brighton, Bath, Cambridge, Chichester, Bournemouth, Surrey, Leicester, Liverpool, Uxbridge, Kent, Reading, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
In order to increase the awareness of the recycling rates, plastic bottle deposit return scheme trial was concluded in just three selected shops . Customers were rewarded with a 10p deposit each when Pret-branded plastic bottles are given back.
In a recent interview,a Spokesman for Pret said “We want to do more to encourage more bottles to be recycled and see if it helps people to use reusable bottles,” She added that all money that wasn’t collected would be “ringfenced” into other sustainability initiatives.
The two-month trial was conducted in April-May and the trial was successful . 15% of Pret’s plastic bottles were returned on the first day.The company promised to increase the incentive to 20p due to the feedback it received from the customers complaint of low incentive in the first trial.
The purpose of the trial is to validate how many bottles are returned and to see if it encourages more customers to opt for a reusable bottle. Countries such as Denmark and Germany have seen rates of recycling grow to more than 90% after introducing deposit return schemes.
The Pret and Chilly’s reusable bottles will be available in 14 shops in London, Brighton and Manchester, and they will be introduced to more shops later on in the year at price tag of £20 each a bottle.
