Tyler Perry was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 13, 1969, as Emmitt Perry Jnr. His father name is Emmitt Perry Snr. , a carpenter by profession.
While Perry did not complete high school, he earned a GED.
He is one of four children, he has two elder sisters and a younger brother. he had a very tough childhood and grew up under an abusive father. He once described his father as a man “whose answer to everything was to beat it out of you.
In contrast to his father, his late mother was a devout Christian and took him to church every week where he sensed sanctuary and fulfillment.
“The things that I went through as a kid were horrendous. And I carried that into my adult life. I didn’t have a catharsis for my childhood pain, most of us don’t, and until I learned how to forgive those people and let it go, I was unhappy.”He told a reporter from Ebony when asked about his childhood.
In his early 20s, He was inspired by The Oprah Winfrey Show, when he heard someone described the sometimes therapeutic effect the act of writing can have, enabling the author to work out his or her own problems.
He wrote his first play I Know I’ve Been Changed based on those letters he had written in his journal to himself. Even though, he invested all his investment and time into the project.
The Play “I Know I’ve Been Changed” failed horribly.it was on record that only 30 people showed up the first weekend to see the play and he knew all of them.
He continues to believe in himself for six straight years while combining odd jobs odd so as to support himself to keep the show running, while at some point in his life, living inside his car because he could not afford to pay rent.
He was just starting to think about quitting and giving the whole writing career up when he decided to do one last show so that he could say that he had really given it a try.
In 1998, at age 28, he succeeded in refocusing the play and restaging it in Atlanta. Perry tried one more time to win over theatre audiences.
He rented out the House of Blues in Atlanta for another production of I Know I’ve Been Changed.
The play opened at the House of Blues in Atlanta, Georgia, in the summer of 1998 and sold out eight times in a row, this was after so many years of hard work, he finally earned critical acclaim as well as commercial success.
That same year, Perry proved himself to be a box office powerhouse with the release of his debut film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, starring Kimberly Elise as the scorned wife and Steve Harris as the adulterous husband.
Perry appeared as three different characters in the film, including the legendary Madea. Eventually grossing more than $50 million, the film’s success showed Hollywood that there was a market for urban African American comedies.

Perry once said his father’s answer to everything was to “beat it out of you”.
As a child, Perry once went so far as to attempt suicide in an effort to escape his father’s beatings.
At age 16, he had his first name legally changed from Emmitt to Tyler in an effort to distance himself from his abusive father.

Tyler Perry’s production company was alleged to have unlawfully fired four writers in retaliation for them trying to get a union contract.
The dispute was however resolved a month later when Tyler Perry Studios agreed to be a WGA signatory.
In 2005, Forbes reported that he had sold “more than $100 million in tickets, $30 million in videos of his shows and an estimated $20 million in merchandise”, and “the 300 live shows he produces each year are attended by an average of 35,000 people a week”.
In 2011, Forbes listed him as the highest paid man in entertainment, earning $130 million between May 2010 and 2011.
In 2015 Tyler Perry Studios announced plans to expand operations in Atlanta with the acquisition of 330 acres of historic Fort McPherson Army base.
The studio, which was already home to the production of over 15 films and almost 800 episodes of Tyler’s five television series, has now made a home on over 330 acres.
With that, Tyler Perry Studios welcomes more than 400 job opportunities to the Atlanta and another 800 indirect jobs through partners companies in the same complex.
